2019 marks the 40th anniversary of Whitecaps FC's famous 1979 North American Soccer League championship.
From small wins to the massive celebration parade on Robson Street, local newspapers documented the Whitecaps' road to championship in '79. Amazing stories were told with powerful photography that still resonates with the older fan crowd today.
The 2019 Anniversary Season is about retelling these stories 40 years later.
I drew inspiration from the halftone effect in the newspaper clippings from '79. Throughout campaign development, the 'dots' became a design strategy to integrate heritage into the current soccer season. Images were scanned one by one and blended into the background like flashes of memories. The campaign identity is sophisticated and minimal.
Campaign creatives at BC Place also serve as educational pieces. Like a storybook, it reveals the significant moments that played an important role in Vancouver's history and make what the club is today.
